About the Book Alex and the Squid
Written by Meghan Wilson Duff
Illustrated by Nathalie Dieterlé
Released by Barefoot Books
Every year when the book fair comes to school, Alex struggles. He loves books so much, and yet he never has money to spend at the book fair. But when he sees a new book about his favorite animals, cephalopods like squids and octopuses, he slips it into his backpack and takes it home. After falling asleep studying all the wonderful animals, Alex dreams of meeting and befriending the giant squid, but the next day, when the principal announces that a book was taken from the book fair, Alex has to wrestle with what to do with the book he loves.
Alex and The Squid features:
- A child resolving a private emotional dilemma on their own, with gentle, unobtrusive support from a school librarian
- Lots of cephalopods and facts about cephalopods in the back matter
- An example of using an amnesty box to provide an opportunity for someone to return an item with no questions asked
